I had three quite recent SPU's, one Shindo's Conical GM, a stock Made in Denmark GM conical and a Made in Japan SPU-A... all they sounded quite slow, musical but TOO forgiving, not really letting different recordings to sound "different"... not a compliment, indeed, IMHO... well, after these quite frustrating listening experiences, I finally found two original, '60 Made in Denmark, SPU WITH BUILT-IN JS-made sub-miniature mc transformers!!! ... these, one ellitiptical and one conical tip, ONLY these have IMVHO the right to call'em "SPU"... the sound is so full, dynamic, true-to-life you can't be fooled by lesser designed and built "wannabe-SPUs" - please consider that too manythinks an SPU it's an ugly-looking big, black old-timey headshell - nothing more wrong - this so personal exterior and overall looking is a sort of a curse for Ortofon's and a market trick to attract newbies to "SPU's Vintage Sound" - Ah, those marketing/magazines hypes: how I hate'em!
... then, shortly after this fortunate find - two years ago - I stepped into my Heavenly Experience with several Lumiere/Neumann DST 62 replicas - I now own the three Type Mr. Chiaki Kikuchi-san built - the integrated shell, the EMT mounted shell and the EIA/SME "universal" type and I guess these will be the VERY last cartridge I'll ever buy, period!
They're VERY difficult cartridges to match with arm - superb with FR 64-S and 66-S, Schick 12 " and Ortofon RMG 309 - and MC-irons, as well... the best I own and tried are W.E. 618-B, Peerless' 4611 and 4685, Beyer, Harman Kardon XT-3 and Peerless 4722, the cheaper of the batch, but also the easier to the ear without spending an arm and a leg... and the sound, Jonathan will possibly confirm it, is pure magic... rich, involving, full of micro-details, acid-like enviromental details to die for and the MOST correct sound ever... this is of course my opinion... but anyone who had the chance and who was fortunate enough - Kikuchi-san isn't exporting nor building them anymore - what a pity! - to listen to them usually agree.
